Green Book Club is Reading Swamplandia
Meet new people, become a better writer, and experience books in a whole new way. This group reads and discusses environmentally-themed books chosen and read during the month preceding each meeting. February’s read is by a local Coral Gables author and Pulitzer Prize Nominee, Karen Russel. The book is Swamplandia, which imagines the pleasures and miseries of life in a failing alligator theme park in the Everglades. The story unfolds with a backdrop on the Everglades, including its tragic history of its indigenous people and wildlife. This book was named one of the best books in 2011 by the New York Times. Come see what all the fuss is about! Meetings are the second Tuesday of each month. Newcomers are always welcome. Contact Benjia Morgenstern at benjiamo@atlanticbb.net for more info. Free Lecture: Bamboo & You
Greetings from Bambooland!
Gary Rich "The Bamboo Man" will present an overview of bamboo and reasons that you should consider planting bamboos in your South Florida garden. (Hint: It's one of the best ways to counteract global warming!) Gary will also talk about the difference between running and clumping bamboo, how to choose the right variety of bamboo for the particular needs of your garden, and how to plant, maintain, water, fertilize, mulch and prune these beautiful grasses. Recommendations on useful tools to obtain the maximum results from your bamboo plants will also be provided. Plants will be available for sale after the lecture. When planted properly and knowledgeably, these giant grasses can grow to formidable forests, guaranteed to leave passersby slack-jawed. Come join us for this Saturday morning lecture. We have coffee and cookies!
