Zumba!
Ditch the workout and join the party! Zumba is a total body exercise that gets your feet moving while you tone your muscles. Learn easy-to-follow choreographies to the rhythm of hip-hop, salsa, mambo, flamenco, reggaeton, merengue and samba at these calorie-torching parties! Classes are taught by certified Zumba instructor Fernando Garcia, who has 25 years of experience teaching students of all levels how to dance,
how to increase self-esteem, and how to enjoy your workout. Classes are $5 for members, $8 for non-members. Dress to sweat.

Fernando is a native of New York City who remains faithful to his Colombian roots and music traditions. He attended New World School of the Arts,  and has performed on television alongside singers such as Gloria Estefan and Chayanne. He has also produced and choreographed several fashion and dance shows in South America, and has judged dance competitions in South Florida. Learn more about the instructor here! Hatha Yoga Classes
These 45 minute sessions are FREE for members with a suggested $10 donation for non-members. The classes encompass a blend of strengthening, stretching, and relaxation. The instructor, Kiki Fries, is known for her versatile classes which cater to individual interests, levels, and requests. Whether you have never practiced yoga before or you are an advanced practitioner with an area of injury, Kiki will ensure that you leave her class feeling refreshed, revitalized, and harmonized. A yoga practitioner for 14 years, Kiki trained at Ayama Yoga in Aventura, FL and teaches a variety of yoga classes throughout Miami. Trained and certified in Holistic Health Counseling, Integrative Nutrition, and Reiki, Kiki helps students to strengthen the body and the spirit while relaxing the mind.

Put Some Zen in Your Yard
This is our last free lecture of the season so don't miss out! Asia has one of the richest horticultural histories in the world, and gardens have played an important role in the shaping of different cultures.
Learn the symbolism and secrets of the Far East gardens with Min Lum Mossman, a published author on Asian garden symbolism and philosophy.  She has taught Architecture and Landscape Design at MDC and is currently teaching in the Asian Studies Program at FIU. Mrs. Mossman will cover the history, typology, and symbolism in the Japanese Garden, essential Chinese/Japanese garden concepts such as walking and centering meditation, and religious and philosophical concepts of the garden such as Confucianism, Taoism, Buddhism, Zen Buddhism, and Shinto.

Free! Summer Eco Arts Camp
Join Educator Winsome Bolt and the Sunflower Society this summer for our Eco Art Camp, held in the Banyan Room every Wednesday. This year’s projects will focus on international art with different themes presented from countries such as Mexico, Spain, China and Jamaica. Once a week, students ages 8-12 can explore, play, and create one-of-a-kind crafts from recycled and repurposed materials. Get out from behind the TV screen and step into the Garden this summer for hands-on creativity and learning. A one time $10 enrollment fee is suggested to help cover the cost of art supplies.

Chapungu: The Great Stone Sculptors of Africa
The Miami Beach Botanical Garden invites you to explore Chapungu: The Great Stone Sculptors of Africa, a free exhibit of statury showing June 21 through November 16, 2013. (Formerly displayed at Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden). There will be a free reception to celebrate the opening of the exhibit Friday, June 21 from 6 to 8 p.m.

On display are 20 works from Zimbabwe’s greatest contemporary sculptors, whose art invokes an awareness of the wisdom and legends of traditional African cultures. These impressive monoliths have an expressive power unlike any other, depicting themes such as nature and the environment, family and society, and legends and the spirit world.

Pieces from the exhibit will be available for sale throughout their time at the Garden. Come discover the reasons for this exhibit's critical acclaim the world over.

Miami Performance International Festival '13
This exciting four-week program of performance art, video screenings, talks and workshops provides an opportunity for the public to come face-to-face with the breadth and depth of performance art. The festival offers visceral and challenging performance works by artists from 19 countries as well as more than 40 national and local artists. Catch a glimpse of the creative process across a range of media, as you are presented with cross-disciplinary works that speak to high levels of innovation, critical thinking, and social engagement. Events are free but availability is limited.

Unlike theater and dance, all MP ‘13 performances have no designated areas nor are they presented on a stage, but rather on the floor, dissolving the boundary between the artists and viewers. Click here for a schedule of artists and events at the Garden and other venues.

All City Slam
With growing interest in spoken word for teens and as part of its WordSpeak Project, Tigertail Productions is offering four FREE workshops and a slam for South Florida Teens. All City Slam was launched to assist Miami Dade teens in the development of their writing and performance. 

Four dynamic poets, writers and directors will give hour-long workshops. Alexis Caputo, Teo Castellanos, Rudi Goblen and Deborah Magdalena. Cash prizes ($100/1st, $75/2nd, $25/3rd) will go to the top three slam winners. No need to pre-register for the workshops or slam, just show up and register onsite.

Pleasure, Fear and the Pursuit of Happiness Art Reception

The Bass Museum of Art along with Miami Beach Botanical Garden and the ArtCenter/South Florida present Nayda Collazo-Llorens: Pleasure, Fear and the Pursuit of Happiness. A public textual intervention consisting of text bubbles throughout the walking paths of the Miami Beach Botanical Garden. Collazo-Llorens’ works are based on thoughts and memories, both real and invented, collected from Miami Beach locals and visitors. The text was collected by completing on-site questionnaires, informal surveys and casual conversations in and around Miami Beach. Pedestrians will experience the narrative as they walk the gardens. The textscape will be exhibited until November 3, 2013. The free opening reception will start at the Miami Beach Botanical Garden from 5 to 7 p.m. with cocktails and conversation. Afterwards, walk over to Bass Museum for the afterparty, Hot Nights Cool Jazz from 7 to 9 p.m. with music by the Paul Ayick quintet. RSVP at membership@mbgarden.org
