Free Saturday Seminar: The Sustainable Garden
The world can be complicated, but that doesn't mean gardening has to be. Learn how local permaculture farmer Alex Perez is growing his own edibles and medicinals in a way that can sustain himself and the land for now, and for years to come. Alex will share organic and natural ways to control problems in the South Florida garden, and teach you how to plan and manage all aspects of a garden with the long-term health of the planet in mind. Whitefly, aphids, fungi and plant viruses can be controlled without harsh chemicals that destroy beneficial organisms. Learn strategies for avoiding these problems and how to deal with them sustainably when they arise. Alex is a teacher, organic farmer, and founder of Green Paradise Eco Farms in Clewiston, Florida.

Free Summer Art Camp
Join art teacher and gardener Winsome Bolt in the Miami Beach Botanical Garden for this free annual art camp for kindergarten and grade school students ages 6 and up. Children will work with a variety of mediums to discover their favorite way to express themselves, approaching learning with creativity and inventiveness. Camp-goers will use the Garden as their canvas: we take inspiration from the surroundings by either recreating what we see in front of us, or using natural materials such as seeds, rocks and leaves in our art. Children will develop tactile learning skills and social skills as they use their right brain to interpret their surroundings. Please bring a small snack for class. Call 305.673.7256 for more information or visit the Garden's website.

Free Wordspeak Poetry Performance
Tigertail Productions presents six vibrant Miami-Dade youths as the spoken word team, WordSpeak. The team was chosen from a field of more than 1,000 teenagers from local high schools who participated in open mic events such as WordSpeak and SpeakOut programs by Tigertail Productions throughout the year. This year's team is headed to Philadelphia from July 16-19 to participate in the Olympics of spoken word, the Brave New Voices competition. This free performance at the Garden will provide the team with an opportunity to perform before a live audience prior to the competition, and it is the first time all six will be performing together. Come support local art and local youth! More information available here.
